The European Commission has approved under the EU Merger Regulation the acquisition of King Digital Entertainment plc of Ireland by Activision Blizzard Inc. of the United States.
Activision Blizzard is traded on NASDAQ. It develops and publishes online games in most countries around the world, mainly for personal computers ("PCs") and consoles and, to a limited extent, mobile devices. King is a mobile game developer, principally for tablets and smartphones.
The Commission concluded that the proposed acquisition would raise no competition concerns, notably because of the moderate overlap between the companies' activities and the presence of a number of alternative players, including potential new entrants. Moreover, customers can switch suppliers easily and the barriers for new competitors to enter the market are low.
The transaction was examined under the normal merger review procedure. More information is available on the Commission's competition website, in the public case register under the case number M.7866.
