However, research from Oxford University has found no evidence, based on data from 200,000 parents of children aged two to five, that excessive digital usage is detrimental to young children's wellbeing.²

Expert game developer, Roman Krainenko, has always been fascinated by educational technology (EdTech) and how we should shape the next generation in a positive manner, using digital.

Krainenko is now CEO of Tabi Land, an original and adaptive learning app for preschoolers. Krainenko, his co-founder Dmitry Sukhodeev and their colleagues have a vision to not only create another app or game for young kids to play or learn, but an interactive game with super engaging and fun characters to educate them.

"Children under five years old are on their screens for an average of 2.5 hours per day³ and they watch three types of visual material. Firstly, videos which are passive. Secondly, learning apps are educationally valuable, but do not hold kids' attention for long. Thirdly, games - which offer effective interaction, but the novelty value soon wears off.

"So, we thought, there is a gap that needs filling. How to keep the attention of preschoolers, while offering engaging content which will actively stimulate their brains?"

Inspired by Sesame Street

Inspired by the methodology Sesame Street employed to revolutionize children's television, Krainenko understood that fun characters were key to grabbing and holding young children's attention and getting them to positively interact.

The fundamentals of Tabi Landwere born.

Krainenko and his team of European games developers with more than 15 years of games and EedTech experience then combed through Europe and the United States, undertaking exhaustive research from children, their parents and learning professionals to acquire the data they needed to begin their pioneering methodology and bring Tabi Land to life.

Now launched on App Store and Google Play, the child development game combines virtual friends, interactive cartoons, gamification, and AI. Original interactive cartoons are used alongside developing games and embedded content selected specifically from YouTube.

Engaging characters and personalization

Three interactive characters will pop up to interrupt and engage with the child user during their screen time. Each character will appeal to different personality types. The characters engage the kids in fun, interactive communication, enticing them to complete learning exercises. Afterwards, they can watch cartoons: "Job done, time to have fun!" or the characters will instruct the child to take a break or have rest.

The AI factor detects the child's interests, abilities, and skills, and recognizes their speech, so that the characters even call the child by his or her name. This personalization is a key factor in the app's forecasted success. More than 20 educational game modules mean that preschoolers have multiple options for play, using long-term motivation and even learning about virtual currency.

The child experiences a blend of the best of the virtual world and the real world, enhancing both engagement and enjoyment.

"Premium Virtual Babysitter"

The app has unique remote access ‘Parent Mode' whereby parents and carers maintain remote control over the kid's screen time. This provides parents with seamless control and progress feedback on the child's sessions and screentime as they follow their child's development in the dashboard.

Early testing has revealed that Tabi Land reduces time spent watching videos by 65%.

"Ultimately, we want Tabi Land to be a premium virtual babysitter - our app drives the child's attention towards content that engages and entertains them specifically, while also being useful and educational, using the power of AI,"added Krainenko.
