Mantra Initiates Carbon Capture and Water Desalination Integration Project and Welcomes New Scientific Advisor
Vancouver, British Columbia / CRWE PRESS RELEASE / May 18, 2016 – Mantra Energy Alternatives, a subsidiary of Mantra Venture Group Ltd. (OTCQB: MVTG),
has announced that it is launching an exploratory hybrid carbon conversion and water desalination project. The purpose of the project is to evaluate the potential of the integration of desalination processes with Mantra's ERC technology to produce high-value chemicals such as formate brine and syngas while simultaneously removing salts from saline water. The primary benefit of the integration is the fact that sodium ions from saline water can be utilised directly to form sodium formate salts, eliminating the need for an external source of the metal cation. The symbiosis of the two technologies would improve the economics of the ERC process, and generate a valuable by-product: fresh water.
While awaiting the near-term results of multiple national and international grant proposals, Mantra’s R&D team has been exploring the potential of the ERC technology to address, besides carbon emissions, other issues of the 21st century.
“Emission of carbon dioxide and shortages of fresh water are amongst the most important challenges that many industries, including the oil and gas industry, face, and with this project we expect to address them both,” said Mantra CEO Larry Kristof. “We predict that the proof-of-concept phase will lead to a more comprehensive project for simultaneous water treatment and carbon capture.”
The integration of the two technologies will be tested in a new ERC reactor recently developed at Mantra, initially with simulated wastewater, followed by trials with authentic water samples. Early results are expected within a few months.
Mantra is also welcoming a new member of the Scientific Advisory board in Dr. Archer L. Baskerville (MD). Dr. Baskerville is a Fellow in the American College of Cardiology and Fellow in the Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention. He began his practice as a solo practitioner, and it evolved into a nine-member group, later merging with a local area Hospital Medical Management Group. Over 30 years, Dr. Baskerville has had the opportunity to lecture and teach both locally and nationally. He is a participating member of many professional associations, including Richmond Academy of Medicine, Medical Society of VA, Old Dominion Medical Society, American Heart Association, American Medical Association, American Society of Echocardiography, American Society of Nuclear Medicine and Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions.
Dr. Baskerville will support Mantra with his extensive knowledge of scientific business development, as well as the local and global health impacts of climate change.
About Mantra Venture Group
Mantra Venture Group Ltd. (OTCQB: MVTG) is a clean technology incubator that takes innovative emerging technologies and moves them towards commercialization. The Company, through its subsidiary Mantra Energy Alternatives, is currently developing two groundbreaking electrochemical technologies designed to make reducing greenhouse gas emissions profitable, ERC (Electro-Reduction of Carbon Dioxide) and MRFC (Mixed-Reactant Fuel Cell).
ERC is a form of “carbon capture and utilization” (CCU) that converts the polluting greenhouse gas carbon dioxide into useful, valuable products including formic acid and formate salts. By utilizing clean electricity, the process offers the potential for an industrial plant to reduce emissions while generating a saleable product and a profit.
The MRFC is an unconventional fuel cell that uses a mixture of fuel and oxidant, thereby greatly reducing the complexity and cost of the fuel cell system. The MRFC is cheaper, lighter, and more compact than conventional fuel cell technologies.
