Rio's Engenheiro Coelho Cintra tunnel, known as the “New Tunnel” which connects the Botafogo and Copacabana neighborhoods in Rio, was the first place to feature the decoration chosen by the local Rio government to mark the Olympics and Paralympic games to be held in August and September. According to the Rio local government, the main routes leading to the event venues will be specially decorated.
The design chosen for the decoration is in line with the general branding features created by the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games and evokes the Rio cityscapes and the diversity of the Brazilian people.
The unveiling of the New Tunnel decoration on Monday (Jun. 27) marked the 39 days until the opening of the 2016 Olympic Games at Maracanã stadium on August 5. The New Tunnel leads to the Marina da Glória, where the sailing events will take place, from Rio's southern districts (Zona Sul), and also to Copacabana Beach, the venue for beach volleyball, triathlon, and marathon swimming, from downtown Rio.
Other parts of the city also will also get Olympic and Paralympic decorations, including the Flamengo Park, the Barra da Tijuca pedestrian bridge, the portal built on the way to Galeão International Airport (Antonio Carlos Jobim), and others.
