Surgical clip appliers are used to mechanically apply ligation clips. Clip appliers are used predominantly during cholecystectomy procedures, applied to either end of a section of malignant tissue in order to minimize bleeding. The shaft of the clip applier is normally inserted through a trocar. The jaw at the distal end of the device holds the clip. The clip applier segment is further sub-segmented by disposable and reposable variants. Reposable clip appliers are only available in 10 mm sizes. Disposable clip appliers come in 5 mm and 10 mm sizes.

The growth of the closure device market has been driven by the increasing number of laparoscopic procedures performed. Bariatric surgery in particular will drive the closure device market, as certain procedures require extensive use of closure staples, such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. The growth of this market is limited by the use of advanced energy devices such as bipolar and ultrasonic instruments, which can cut and close vessels without the use of standard closure devices. Closure devices continue to be required for reconnecting tissue during the procedure and for closing incisions made by trocars.
