Vermont Uses Block Grant Funding To Prevent Suicides With Emergency Department Screenings
In Vermont, suicide is a serious and growing public health threat for young people-with a yearly average of 1,200 emergency department (ED) visits for self-directed violence for young people aged 10-24 years. With a portion of its Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant funding, Vermont Department of Health (VDH) worked with Northwestern Medical Center to apply systematic ways to prevent suicides through proven prevention strategies-such as risk screening, assessment, and early intervention-in hospital EDs.
