Texas man sentenced to more than 14 years for involuntary manslaughter while DUI
JUNCTION CITY – (June 1, 2018) – A Texas man was sentenced today to more than 14 years in prison for murder and involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said.
Steven W. Johnson, 45, of Houston, pleaded guilty in March to one count of murder in the second degree - reckless and two counts of involuntary manslaughter (DUI). Judge Steven L. Hornbaker sentenced Johnson to 174 months for murder in the second degree and 41 months each for the two involuntary manslaughter charges to be served concurrently. The charges stemmed from a fatal crash on Interstate 70 in November 2016 that resulted in the deaths of Jessica Michelle Thompson and her two minor children.
The case was investigated by the Kansas Highway Patrol. Assistant Attorney General Corey Kenney of Schmidt’s office prosecuted the case.
