AG Derek Schmidt to join in town hall meeting on combating elder financial exploitation
Meeting in Topeka to be hosted by federal Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection
TOPEKA – (June 5, 2018) – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt and Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection Acting Director Mick Mulvaney will provide remarks Friday at a town hall meeting in Topeka on efforts to combat elder financial exploitation. Mulvaney also will moderate a panel discussion on the subject.
The event is being hosted by the federal Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection with support from the Kansas Attorney General’s Office. It will take place on Friday, June 8, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the KBI Forensic Science Center Lecture Hall, Washburn University, 2001 SW Washburn Ave, Topeka, KS, 66604. The event will also be streamed live at www.consumerfinance.gov.
“We are delighted to bring to Kansas this effort to strengthen coordination of federal, state, local and private efforts to fight the financial abuse and exploitation of older Kansans,” Schmidt said.
Schmidt is currently serving as president of the National Association of Attorneys General. During his presidency, he has focused the organization on helping states gather expertise and build capacity to fight elder abuse, neglect and exploitation. Earlier this year, Schmidt and Mulvaney, who also serves as director of the federal Office of Management and Budget, discussed working cooperatively to combat elder financial exploitation. This week’s BCFP town hall in Topeka is a result of that discussion.
