Continental: The History And The Future Of Tyre Development
Continental tyres have marked their presence all over the world as the market leaders of the tyre industry. The Continental Group have their divisions spread across five automotive areas: Powertrain, Chassis and Safety, Interior, ContiTech and Tyres. Continental has been making sure that they innovate new technologies not only for safer but better driving. Their research, development and manufacturing are up to the mark in all the automotive areas and that can be easily found in their performance.
Their main focus since the start has always been on tyre development and safer motoring.
A.THE BEGINNING OF CONTINENTAL
Continental was founded in 1871 in Hanover, Germany. They have a spectacular history of tyre innovations and expertise. They have marked their milestones by the invention of useful technologies to enhance the driving experience. They built a detachable wheel rim- this innovation is believed to have saved a lot of time and efforts when it came to changing the tyres. Continental’s tyre technology makes transport and mobility safer, faster, sustainable, affordable, convenient and more customisable. They also introduced the world’s first pneumatic tyres which replaced the solid tyres.
They introduced synthetic rubbers in 1936 making way for more sophisticated compounds in the manufacturing and production of tyres. The radial tyres were introduced and produced in 1960. By 1967, they opened the Contidrom tyre testing facility.
In 1972, the new range of winter tyres paved the way as Continental launched Conti-Contact winter tyres. If winter tyres are a thing around the colder areas and winter driving enthusiasts, thank Continental. In 1983, new technology for damping of engine and vibrations which are also known as Continental hydramounts was produced on a mass level. The credit to reduce fuel emissions and consumption goes to Integrated Starter Alternator Damper. ISAD combines the vehicle’s generator and starter as a single which are considered essential for hybrid propulsion systems.
In 1991, they launched ContiEcoContact keeping in mind the ecological impact of the tyre. This was known as the world’s first-ever sustainable tyre. Since then, their performance and safety have aligned with an eco-friendly production. One thing that made ContiEcoContact from the conventional tyres was it left considerably less rubber residue on the tarmac. It would also last longer than the others. This eventually helped in improving fuel efficiency. It is now in the fifth generation and ranked as best-in-class.
Their developments positioned themselves as global tyre manufacturers by adding new sites in Mexico, Slovakia, Argentina and South Africa.
Their impressive achievements of the past were succeeded with more innovative technologies which are marking their presence and eventually, their future.
B. CONTINENTAL TODAY
The Continental tyres have popularly fitted technologies such as Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS), energy-efficient fuel injection, digital dashboard consoles and infrared sensor systems. They are fitted to every one in three new cars. The original equipment called Continental’s OE is tried and trusted by many car manufacturers.
They also became the recipient of the prestigious 2019 Product of the Year award by UK’s largest weekly selling car magazine- Auto Express. This was after they received awards for summer, winter and All-season Tyre of the Year success in 2018.
They are going to be the centre of tyre industries in future as they are developing dandelion rubber, a line of sustainable tyres. This technology can be used in passenger light truck vehicles. This could replace traditional resources such as rubber tree plantations for the making of tyres. This also means less deforestation which is a huge contribution to the environment considering the havoc caused by climate change nowadays. The dandelion rubber could be produced in urban and industrial sites too.
This shows that Continental and another trusted dealer- Nexen banden Leeuwarden has everything that makes them the world’s best tyre manufacturer. Their focus is on innovation with sustainability
