U.S. Marshals Arrest 16-Year-Old Mt. Eden Subway Murder Suspect
New York, NY – At approximately 11:00 am today, the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) and New York Police Department (NYPD) with the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, arrested a 16-year-old suspected shooter, one of three wanted for the February 13 evening rush hour shooting at the Mount Eden train station resulting in the death of one passenger and non-life-threatening injuries to five others. The incident was allegedly started by two rival gangs who boarded the same train at different stations. A verbal dispute ensued, quickly escalating into an altercation and gunfire, resulting in one death.
After the crime was reported, the case was rapidly adopted by the USMS New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, working closely with the NYPD. They quickly identified the suspect, who had been previously arrested in April 2023, for attempted robbery, and tracked him to Bronx, NY where he was apprehended and turned over to the NYPD detective squad for further questioning and processing. The defendant remains in NYPD custody pending adjudication of his alleged crime.
Ralph Sozio, the U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of New York, praised the outstanding collaborative effort. “Gang violence such as this senseless shooting resulting in death and injury to innocent citizens of the City of New York waiting for their train to get home will not be tolerated. We will use all the resources at our disposal to find you and bring you to justice to make our streets safe again,” said Sozio.
The New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force began operations in April 2002, and was the first regional fugitive task force to become fully operational following the Presidential Threat Protection Act of 2000. The New York/New Jersey is the flagship that has allowed seven other regional fugitive task forces to be created across the country. The task force has partnership agreements with more than 90 federal, state and local agencies and 13 fully operational offices. The New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force has successfully apprehended more than 95,000 fugitives since inception.
