Marquis Who’s Who Honors Joe E. Heimlich, PhD, for Contributions to Environmental Education

Drawing on over 40 years of experience, Dr. Heimlich directs research efforts for the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) 's Center for Research and Evaluation, a social science laboratory.
From Student to Expert
Dr. Heimlich 's professional success began with a foundational academic journey. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in communication arts, theatre and dance from Capital University in 1979. He subsequently received a Master of Arts in public policy education from The Ohio State University in 1989. He completed his Doctor of Philosophy in education psychology in 1990 from the same institution.
Dr. Heimlich 's academic journey has provided him with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in his field, ultimately shaping his professional career and journey to success.
With a career spanning various roles, Dr. Heimlich began his journey at the Ohio State University Extension where, after obtaining his graduate degrees, he advanced to a faculty position and was eventually bestowed with the distinguished title of professor emeritus. In this capacity, he has made significant contributions to waste management policy and education and global environmental education.
Throughout the course of his professional journey, Dr. Heimlich also found success as a senior research associate at the Institute for Learning Innovation, where he worked from 2003 to 2011. After his time at the Institute for Learning Innovation, he served as the senior director of research at the Lifelong Learning Group, now known as the Center for Research and Evaluation at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI), a position he holds to this day.
COSI 's Center for Research and Evaluation, a social science laboratory, is actively involved in federally funded projects worldwide. With the center 's primary focus on studying how people learn in school settings, Dr. Heimlich has collaborated with various research teams within the museum and was instrumental in establishing the laboratory.
Time Outside the Laboratory
Outside the laboratory, Dr. Heimlich has held various local, state, national and international leadership positions with civic-minded and educational organizations. Since 2016, he has been chair of the board of directors for the Available Light Theatre and president of the Visitor Studies Association from 2007 to 2010.
Dr. Heimlich 's other pursuits included serving as a blog coordinator and program co-chair for LGBT and Arts & Culture Topical Interest Groups within the American Evaluation Association in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
As a dedicated environmental educator, Dr. Heimlich 's longest-standing involvement with an organization was with the North American Association for Environmental Education, where he served in several leadership roles, including past president.
Recognitions
Dr. Heimlich received the 2013 Walter E. Jeske Award from the North American Association for Environmental Education, which recognized him for his contributions to the field. He also co-authored "Developing Teaching Style in Adult Education," published by Jossey-Bass in 1994, and edited various books and collections. One of his most notable achievements was being appointed one of the first two U.S. representatives to the World Congress for Environmental Education, where he served for slightly over a decade.
Dr. Heimlich, who was encouraged to pursue his passions, attributes his success to the unwavering support of his parents, both of whom were educators dedicated to providing cultural and social experiences for their children. Outside of his professional life, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends and looks forward to exploring end-of-career projects in collaboration with his colleagues.
