This achievement has further solidified Sandoll’s reputation as a trusted partner for global corporations, driving continued growth. It is also in response to the latest trend where the need for multilingual fonts in international markets is growing, and CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) font development capabilities are becoming important accordingly.
The IBM Plex Sans font series is a multilingual typography project launched by IBM in 2017 to provide a consistent typographic experience across different languages. Covering Latin, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and more, the project’s CJK font development was led by Sandoll.
The development of IBM Plex Sans CJK began in 2018 and took approximately seven years. The primary challenge was ensuring that Latin typographic characteristics were harmoniously integrated into CJK fonts, requiring significant effort and refinement.
The newly-released IBM Plex Sans TC and SC maintain IBM’s design philosophy while optimizing Chinese character structure and readability.
A key focus was to maximize legibility in digital environments while preserving the unique features of each script. The Chinese fonts were carefully adjusted to maintain visual balance with Latin, Korean, and Japanese fonts, reinforcing IBM’s brand identity.
Thanks to this high level of precision, IBM Plex Sans is now widely used across IBM’s entire product ecosystem. The font has received positive reviews for its readability and design consistency, further strengthening IBM’s collaboration with Sandoll and attracting new global projects.
Sandoll’s expertise in CJK font development, combined with its industry-leading hinting technology, enables companies to create CJK fonts simultaneously while ensuring optimal readability and consistent typography. This streamlined approach also simplifies future language expansion and technical support, while increasing demand from global clients.
By developing CJK fonts as a unified set, companies can enhance brand consistency, improve efficiency, and reduce development costs and time. Additionally, the need for complex communication is eliminated, ensuring seamless project execution.
A Sandoll representative stated, “Sandoll has the capability to develop not only CJK fonts but also Latin, Cyrillic, and other global scripts. We will continue to invest in research and development, strengthen partnerships with global corporations, and expand our global presence.”
Sandoll, founded in 1984, is South Korea’s leading type foundry. The company developed Malgun Gothic, the default Korean font for Microsoft Office, and was responsible for the Noto Sans & Serif KR, created in collaboration with Google and Adobe. Sandoll also designed Apple SD Sandoll Gothic Neo, a system font for Apple, and has been recognized for its top-tier font technology through the creation of custom corporate fonts for global brands such as Samsung, LG, and Hyundai.
