Gov. Cox: Utah Takes Legal Action Against TikTok for Harm to Children
Today, Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Attorney General Sean Reyes, and Utah Department of Commerce Executive Director Margaret Busse announced a legal filing against TikTok, Inc. The move comes as part of Utah's ongoing efforts to hold social media companies accountable for the harm they are causing to the state's children. After months of delays and providing incomplete information in response to administrative subpoenas, the Division of Consumer Protection has filed a motion in state district court to hold TikTok in contempt and force it to comply swiftly with the subpoena.
According to Governor Cox, Utah will continue to insist on holding social media companies accountable for their impact on youth. The lack of TikTok's credible and transparent response to the investigative subpoenas raises concerns.
Attorney General Reyes stressed that child safety is a top priority, and they will not accept further excuses or delays from TikTok.
The legal action was filed against TikTok, one of the largest social media companies globally, after it failed to provide complete responses to two investigative subpoenas issued in February and May 2023.
Margaret Busse, executive director of the Utah Department of Commerce, emphasized the state's proactive approach in addressing harm to youth on social media. The actions of TikTok have eroded trust, and the state is determined to protect its young residents from potential risks.
