NV Gov. Lombardo: Proposal to Maintain Opportunity Scholarship Funding
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo is taking action to prevent potential disruptions for hundreds of school children by proposing the use of unallocated federal COVID relief funds to safeguard their Opportunity Scholarships.
Governor Lombardo expressed his commitment to these children, emphasizing that the Democrats in the Legislature had previously refused to fund the scholarships, leading to the risk of students being forced out of their schools for the upcoming academic year—an outcome he finds unacceptable.
To address the issue, the Governor's Finance Office swiftly submitted a 15-day work program to the Legislature's Interim Finance Committee. The proposal seeks to secure approval for the use of unallocated COVID relief funds to provide scholarship funding for the Opportunity Scholarships, a measure that was previously denied during the legislative session.
According to Amy Stephenson, the Director of the Governor's Finance Office, this approach is fully compliant with federal regulations, aligning with how the funds were allocated under the prior administration.
Under the State Budget Act, the Interim Finance Committee now has 15 days to take action on the proposal; if no action is taken within the timeframe, it will be deemed approved. The Governor's initiative aims to ensure that children benefiting from Opportunity Scholarships can continue their education without disruption.
