U.S. Marshals Service, Local Law Enforcement Lead Major Operation in Guaynabo Housing Complex
San Juan, PR – In support of the president’s initiative to reduce violent crime, the U.S. Marshals Service Puerto Rico Violent Offender Task Force, working in coordination with the Guaynabo City Police Department and the Puerto Rico Police Bureau, executed a targeted operation Thursday morning at the La Rosaleda public housing complex in Guaynabo.
The operation stemmed from ongoing investigations into violent gang activity linked to transnational criminal organizations. According to investigators, gangs had seized control of the housing complex, turning it into a drug distribution hub and refuge for violent offenders and fugitives. Residents were left living in fear as criminals engaged in ongoing violence and even threatened public officials attempting to provide essential community services.
During the operation, PRVOTF personnel arrested Juan Perez Moralez, who was found in possession of significant quantities of illegal drugs, assorted ammunition, and a loaded high-capacity handgun magazine. Working alongside the Drug Enforcement Administration and Homeland Security Investigations, law enforcement executed several search warrants, resulting in at least six arrests and the seizure of five firearms of various calibers.
Authorities also inspected unassigned apartments under the Puerto Rico Department of Housing that were being illegally occupied by the criminal organization for illicit activities. Investigators are further pursuing individuals suspected of threatening public officials entering the complex to deliver services.
U.S. Marshal Wilmer Ocasio, District of Puerto Rico, emphasized the agency’s commitment:
“The U.S. Marshals Service in Puerto Rico remains firmly committed, together with our federal and state law enforcement partners, to protecting our communities by dismantling violent gangs with ties to transnational criminal organizations. It is unacceptable for armed criminals to terrorize residents and block essential services. We will not allow these threats to continue. Following the directives of the U.S. Department of Justice and the President, we will not stop until our communities are safe.”
The U.S. Marshals Service is the federal government’s primary agency for fugitive investigations. The Marshals have the broadest arrest authority among federal law enforcement agencies. U.S. Marshals assist state and local agencies in locating and apprehending their most violent fugitives.
