11th Circuit Affirms Conviction, 30-Year Sentence in Cold Case Prosecution of 2001 Murder of Pregnant Army Private in Germany
Pensacola, Florida / Friday, October 16, 2026 – The United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit affirmed the conviction and sentence of Shannon L. Wilkerson, 46, for the 2001 murder of 19-year-old Army Private First Class Amanda Gonzales and her unborn child. In May 2024, a Pensacola jury convicted Wilkerson, a former U.S. solider, of second-degree murder. According to court documents, Wilkerson beat and strangled Gonzales to death on November 3, 2001, in her barracks room at Fliegerhorst Kaserne, then a U.S. Army base in Hanau, Germany. Evidence introduced at trial indicated that Wilkerson feared he was the father of Gonzales’ unborn child and that her pregnancy would interfere with his military career and his marriage to another soldier on the base. Wilkerson was a member of the U.S. Armed Forces at the time of the offense but was later discharged. The district court sentenced Wilkerson to 30 years’ imprisonment.
United States Attorney John P. Heekin said: “This cold case prosecution demonstrated the lengths to which my office will go to achieve justice for crime victims. I am extremely proud that we successfully defended this conviction and sentence against the defendant’s appeal. Nothing can bring back the innocent lives taken by this defendant’s heinous crime, but defending this successful prosecution against his appeal ensures he will not escape accountability.”
“This case serves as a perfect example of the Criminal Division’s pursuit of justice no matter the challenge,” said Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “I am proud of the work of the Criminal Division prosecutors, the Northern District of Florida, and the federal agents that worked tirelessly to solve this terrible cold case murder. I also want to express my deepest condolences to the family of PFC Amanda Gonzales and hope that the affirming of Shannon Wilkerson’s conviction by the Court of Appeals brings some sense of closure to this two-decade pursuit of justice.”
Following his conviction and sentencing, Wilkerson appealed to the Eleventh Circuit. After briefing by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida defending the conviction and sentence, the Court rejected each of Wilkerson’s arguments in an unpublished opinion without oral argument. It concluded that the district court acted appropriately in keeping out purely speculative alternative-perpetrator evidence claiming that another soldier committed and pleaded to an unrelated double-homicide in 2006, refusing to entertain the defense’s discovery “fishing expedition” for validation data underlying the government’s DNA evidence, and denying Wilkerson’s motion for a new trial. It likewise found no error in the district court’s conclusion that Wilkerson committed perjury at trial when he denied murdering Gonzales and concluded that Wilkerson had not shown that his 30-year sentence was unreasonable. The Eleventh Circuit’s opinion affirming Wilkerson’s conviction and sentence is available here.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation New York and Jacksonville Field Offices investigated this case, with assistance from the Army Criminal Investigative Division. Assistant United States Attorney Jordane New handled the appeal before the Eleventh Circuit. Trial Attorney Patrick Jasperse of the Criminal Division’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section and Assistant United States Attorney David L. Goldberg prosecuted the case.
